چکیده

We report an upper bound on the strain amplitude of gravitational wave bursts in a waveband from around 800 Hz to 1.25kHz. In an eeective coincident observing period of 62 hours, the prototype laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors of the University of Glasgow and Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics, have set a limit of 4:910 ?16 , averaging over wave polarizations and incident directions. This is roughly a factor of 2 worse than the theoretical best limit that the detectors could have set, the excess being due to unmodelled non-Gaussian noise. The experiment has demonstrated the viability of the kind of observations planned for the large-scale interferometers that should be on-line in a few years time.

Detection of gravitational waves from inspiraling compact binaries using a network of interferometric detectors ∗

We formulate the data analysis problem for the detection of the Newtonian waveform from an inspiraling compact-binary by a network of arbitrarily oriented and arbitrarily distributed laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors. We obtain for the first time the relation between the optimal statistic and the magnitude of the network correlation vector, which is constructed from the matched...

The search for gravitational wave bursts in data from the second LIGO science run

The network of detectors comprising the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) are among a new generation of detectors that seek to make the first direct observation of gravitational waves. While providing strong support for the General Theory of Relativity, such observations will also permit new tests of physical theory in regions of strong space-time curvature and high mat...

Results from the first burst hardware injections performed on GEO 600

GEO 600 is a 600 m arm-length, laser interferometric gravitational wave detector, located about 25 km from Hannover, Germany. Starting in November 2003, GEO 600 took part in a coincident data taking period with other detectors around the world. During this time, GEO 600 acquired three weeks of ‘science quality’ data. These data are currently being processed to search for gravitational wave sign...

For how long will gravitational waves remain hidden?

The Laser Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory (LIGO) is a network of first generation interferometric detectors aiming to make the first direct observations of gravitational waves. Progress in the commissioning of the detectors has brought them within a factor of two of their design sensitivity near 150Hz during the most recent science run of the instruments in March of 2005. Further ...
